Clinical Director of Education, Cardiac Echo Lab
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)
Ms. Marilyn Riley has been a cardiac sonographer since 1979 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston and holds RDCS credentials in both Adult and Pediatric Echocardiography. She was recently elected a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography. Her forty-year career at the hospital started with the first echocardiographic machine of the hospital and she has “seen it all” – from the primitive m-mode echocardiography to the current, sophisticated 3D echocardiography.
Ms. Riley served as clinical manager of this busy academic lab for thirty-five years and is now the Clinical Director of Education for the BIDMC echocardiography lab. She lectures and provides hands on training for clinical cardiac fellows, critical care fellows and attending, anesthesia fellows, pulmonary and global health fellows. During her teaching she focuses on clinical practice and optimum image acquisition of the adult patient. Within the echocardiographic lab, she provides case review of unknowns, highlights teaching case examples with staff and coaches to improve image quality and protocol adherence.
In addition to her hospital roles, Ms. Riley has been a member of Team Heart – an NGO dedicated to decrease the burden of cardiac disease in Rwanda. She volunteered in the organization’s annual medical mission in the past ten years. As part of the imaging and teaching team, she screens and help select appropriate patients with rheumatic valvular heart disease for heart valve surgery. The team work with local medical personnel in caring for these patients in the immediate peri-op period and following up on their status with imaging as they return for annual follow up.
