Dr. Eli Gelfand is an internationally-recognized clinical cardiologist with a large consultative practice at Harvard Medical School and special interest and expertise in management of complex valvular heart disease.  He is on staff in the Echocardiography laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and was instrumental in pioneering 3D transthoracic and transesophageal methods at BIDMC, as well as being one of the first clinicians to use intracardiac ultrasound on campus.  Dr. Gelfand is also on staff at the Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Center at BIDMC – one of the oldest established CMR laboratories in the country.

 

His main clinical interests are in the fields of valvular heart disease and in use of handheld ultrasound in clinical outpatient medicine, but his practice spans the entire spectrum of clinical cardiology.  He has been the site principle investigator of many pharmaceutical and device multicenter clinical trials.  He is also interested in the novel applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning on care delivery, with emphasis on efficiency and clinician unburdening.  Dr. Gelfand has had a long interest in Global Health and is a member of Hearts Around the World – an education and training non-profit organizations with projects in Kenya, China, Haiti, Vietnam and Cuba, among others.  At home, he is passionate about immigrant health and founded cardiac clinics for Latino and Eastern European immigrants.  Dr. Gelfand is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and holds an active testamur status from the National Board of Echocardiography.
